In this article series I will present you with a weekly collection of fantastic digital paintings from Deviant Art, this is our way to feature artists that might not yet have a large volume of followers but who have artwork that truly should be seen by a greater audience. I have placed instructions on how to submit a piece of your own art at the bottom of the article. Don't forget to take a look at Lightwyrm on Deviant Art
And without further ado lets get started!
This image demonstrates a very strong use of perspective. Something that pops out, and even with the way it was finalized, it is absolutely gorgeous. Clear, clean and awe-striking. All of those are difficult to achieve with the use of simple elements, and in this case you don't get much simpler than cubes.
Another cleverly constructed piece, and a very beautiful image. The real success of it lies in defining a focal point clearly and in my opinion tariq has done that superbly.
Here is a fantastic example of using lighting and colour to create mood and interest. As with the ones before there is a sense of roughness to the finish, but that never detracts from the piece. That's testimony to the good composition, allowing the artist to work faster and more efficiently.
Another piece that uses focus to define the important features, if you look closely most of the elements are accomplished with quick strokes that define their shape. The artist did not need to go in and recreate every speck of dust on every surface. Believe it or not Occam's Razor applies to art as well, not only can you create focus by only detailing the vital elements but you should always strive to convey the meaning of a piece in as simple, and thus as clear, a way as possible.
Here is a great creature piece that uses colour to effectively pop out the elements in need of focus. It is a good way to display information in a digital painting. Giving the viewers the ability to grasp the point quickly. This is effective in concept artwork and promotional illustration [amongst pretty much everything else].
In recent months it has been hard to find a large range of good digital painting that featured modern day areas, at least in comparison to the amount of fantasy and science fiction art around now. So something like this awesome sketch is always a welcome change. It is well oriented and the architectural elements are rendered superbly.
This is another great example of what I explained in the above few images - your eye instantly goes for the figure, not only is it vibrantly coloured it is also the area of the greatest detail. If you look at the background it is a collection of sporadic strokes that on their own have little visual weight. But that use of a lightly detailed background and a much more detailed character is what makes this digital painting work so well.
Here is an image that uses complimentary colours to its best advantage, the blue and purple hues in the background contrast with the orange and yellow hues of the foreground. That makes this simple image striking to the viewer.
